Job Details

Working 36.5 hours per week/flexible working. As a result of the Customer Journey changes, new and exciting permanent vacancies have arisen for Grade 4 Social Workers to work with our citizens, carers and professionals to fulfil the statutory duties of the Local authority whilst adhering to the relevant legislation, policies and procedures as part of the Sutton or Erdington Constituency Social Work Teams in Birmingham.

Given the strategic agenda to transform Social Work to focus on community development through the constituency-based approach to Social Work and the emerging cross-council strategy to consider the life course of people.

The Sutton and Erdington teams based in the North of Birmingham work with some of the most complex and high-risk citizens. The teams offer some prevention and standard case work opportunities. The teams are looking to embed the council’s goals and vision for positive outcomes for the area we work in applying the conversation model.

The focus of the teams is to ensure that every individual has a conversation, support plan if required and a review or reassessment. The aim is to develop resilience, offer choice and control, promote independence and wellbeing in our citizens through partnership working with all stakeholders and promoting an asset and strengths based approach. Erdington constituency has some pockets of deprivation and poverty that can be challenging to work in but also most rewarding for our staff achievements and Sutton is home to Sutton park, one of the largest urban parks in England. Both constituencies offer great development opportunities to strengthen anyone’s development and frontline practice achievements.

You must be registered with the relevant regulatory body - Social Work England (SWE) .

We have a statutory duty under the Care Act 2014 to provide social care assessments, support planning, review processes for a whole range of vulnerable adults aged 18 years and over. In addition undertaking safeguarding work and assessing mental capacity are essential elements of the Social Work role. Our aim is to ensure the appropriate level of intervention with an emphasis on maximising independence of vulnerable adults who include people with Physical Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health and older adults. We are looking for Social Workers to join us who will use their expertise and are committed to enabling our citizens to become resilience by promoting choice and control, independence and health and wellbeing. Delivering Social Care is challenging and demanding on the Social Work profession, so to ensure the well-being of our staff and to deliver best Social Work practice, you will be supported through strong leadership and management from Team Managers and Senior Practitioners.

To support you we have a comprehensive induction programme and all Newly Qualified Social Workers are enrolled where required onto our Assessed and Supported Year in Employment Programme (ASYE). For experienced staff we have a career pathway which provides opportunity to apply for Senior practitioner positions in the management structure or progress following training to Specialist practitioner positions such Practice Educators and Approved Mental Health Practitioners etc. forming part of your continuous professional development.

The Council is a fantastic place to work. You will find an organisation that is both challenging and supportive; with a leadership impatiently adventurous in its pursuit of excellence.

There is a clear vision which is ensuring that the Council is working for communities today and building for tomorrow, we focus our resources on five key priorities:

  • A Prosperous Birmingham: through a focus on inclusive economic growth, tackling unemployment, attracting inward investment, and maximising the benefits of the Commonwealth Games.
  • An Inclusive Birmingham: through a focus on tackling poverty and inequality, empowering citizens, promoting diversity and civic pride, and supporting and enabling all children and young people to thrive.
  • A Safe Birmingham: through a focus on making the city safer, safeguarding vulnerable citizens, increasing affordable housing, and tackling homelessness.
  • A Healthy Birmingham: through a focus on tackling health inequalities, encouraging physical activity and healthy living, supporting mental health, and improving outcomes for adults with disabilities and older people.
  • A Green Birmingham: through a focus on street cleanliness, improving air quality, continuing the route to net zero, and becoming a city of nature.

We see the Council’s role as providing strategic leadership – that’s being able to visualise a new future for the city and equipping others to share our vision. We want to ensure the provision of services for all, so we can support those least able to support themselves by working with partners and putting citizens and neighbourhoods at the heart of our decision-making.

We are always looking for people who put the customer at the centre of their approach, with a commitment to excellence to help us achieve our vision.  We will support you to develop and thrive in your role, building a pathway for long-term success, with lots of development opportunities, such as apprenticeships.
