Birmingham is changing….and fast! The city is booming as it sees billions of pounds of investment in major development and infrastructure projects. Are you interested in helping to shape the future of our city and how people move around it?

We are looking to appoint a number of passionate, hardworking, dynamic team players with a positive attitude to work within the Transport and Connectivity division and be part of one of the country’s biggest and most exciting local authorities.

Birmingham, home to over 1 million people, is evolving and expanding and you could help deliver the City Council’s ambitious growth plans, which include the development of 50,000 new homes including a 5,000 dwelling sustainable urban extension; major retail, office and leisure schemes and over £5bn of infrastructure projects.

There are opportunities to work on some of the most transformational major upcoming projects in the country including High Speed Rail 2 (HS2), Metro and Sprint Delivery, developing and delivering the Birmingham Transport Plan and Commonwealth Games.

Are you looking for the opportunity to gain practical work experience and help to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to develop your career and work towards membership of a relevant professional body? We are looking for highly motivated individuals ranging from newly qualified graduates to people who have previously gained a professional qualification and are keen to take their first step into a career in Transport Planning, Traffic Management or Travel Demand Management.

Your background might be in transport or traffic or another STEM subject? You might have studied humanities, politics or economics? Or behavioural sciences? You might have an interest or aptitude for data or technology? Do you love spreadsheets?

Applicants with the right mindset and enthusiasm and good transferable skills are as welcome as those who have already committed to working in traffic and transport with a relevant degree.

As well as an attractive salary and flexible working, you will also receive 29 days holiday allowance per year, the opportunity to join the pension scheme and enjoy an impressive package of health and wellbeing benefits, as well as discounts with some of the UKs top retailers, fashion and tech brands.

If you wish to progress to gain a professional qualification, we will give you paid leave to complete your studies.

The Council is a fantastic place to work. You will find an organisation that is both challenging and supportive; with a leadership impatiently adventurous in its pursuit of excellence.

There is a clear vision which is ensuring that the Council is working for communities today and building for tomorrow, we focus our resources on five key priorities:

  • A Prosperous Birmingham: through a focus on inclusive economic growth, tackling unemployment, attracting inward investment, and maximising the benefits of the Commonwealth Games.
  • An Inclusive Birmingham: through a focus on tackling poverty and inequality, empowering citizens, promoting diversity and civic pride, and supporting and enabling all children and young people to thrive.
  • A Safe Birmingham: through a focus on making the city safer, safeguarding vulnerable citizens, increasing affordable housing, and tackling homelessness.
  • A Healthy Birmingham: through a focus on tackling health inequalities, encouraging physical activity and healthy living, supporting mental health, and improving outcomes for adults with disabilities and older people.
  • A Green Birmingham: through a focus on street cleanliness, improving air quality, continuing the route to net zero, and becoming a city of nature.

We see the Council’s role as providing strategic leadership – that’s being able to visualise a new future for the city and equipping others to share our vision. We want to ensure the provision of services for all, so we can support those least able to support themselves by working with partners and putting citizens and neighbourhoods at the heart of our decision-making.

We are always looking for people who put the customer at the centre of their approach, with a commitment to excellence to help us achieve our vision.  We will support you to develop and thrive in your role, building a pathway for long-term success, with lots of development opportunities, such as apprenticeships.

In return, we offer you excellent terms and conditions, generous annual leave, a great pension scheme, well-being support, annual travel passes and discounts at a number of city centre establishments.
