Deputy Service Lead for Sensory Support
Sensory Support is a city-wide specialist support service, comprising of the Hearing Support Team, Vision Support Team and the Physical Difficulties Support Service.
Specialist teachers, teaching assistants and technicians support children and young people aged 0-25 years, with sensory, physical and medical needs, in a variety of settings across the city, including homes, early years settings, schools and colleges.
The Deputy Service Lead will play a key role in the Senior Leadership Team. You will support the oversight of Sensory Support: Hearing Support Team, Vision Support Team and the Physical Difficulties Support Service. You will take the lead on a key area identified within the Birmingham SEND transformational programme and contribute to the overall SEND programme across the directorate
Candidates for this post must hold qualified teacher status and have an additional mandatory qualification in teaching deaf or vision impaired children, or recent and relevant experience in advising schools and settings about children with physical/medical difficulties.
You must have recent, successful management and leadership experience
• Demonstrate knowledge of current guidance related to the specific SEND area of children with sensory impairment/ physical/ medical needs
• Demonstrate good inter-personal skills (verbal and written) and an ability to relate well to children and adults and evidence of working with other agencies.
• Demonstrate an ability to manage own time and workload
• Demonstrate an ability to manage and provide budgets
• Demonstrate an ability to provide leadership and direction for the work of Sensory Support/PDSS
• Have recent successful management experience
• Possess a mandatory qualification for teaching pupils with sensory impairment or have recent and relevant advisory experience working with schools around children with Physical Difficulties
• Have substantial teaching experience teaching pupils with SEND
• Demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of issues relating to SEND
• Demonstrate experience of providing support and training to teachers and support staff
• Have experience of developing innovative approaches in teaching pupils with sensory impairment/ PD/Medical needs
• Demonstrate up-to-date knowledge of curriculum and assessment
• Have experience of the recruitment and deployment of teachers and support staff
• Have confidence in the use of ICT to support learning
• Have a commitment to further training and professional development
