Job Details

As Technical Manager, you’ll join the Sprint team during a crucial phase of the project, as we move towards construction and delivery to ensure the A34 and A45 bus priority corridor schemes, linking Walsall to Solihull and Birmingham Airport via Birmingham City Centre, are delivered on budget and in time for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022. Following 2022, there are a further five Sprint schemes to be developed and delivered.

The scheme, the first bus priority corridor of its kind anywhere in the country, places passenger experience front and centre and underpinned by innovative intelligent transport technology systems. As Technical Manager, your role will be to deliver Sprint Technical workstream outputs to time, cost and quality, utilising and managing the appropriate resources, over the project lifecycle for Transport for West Midlands, within the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).

You’ll oversee technical workstream delivery, specifically relating to shelter delivery, Closed Circuit Television, Real Time Information, Ticketing Vending, information provision, bus priority testing and configuration and SCOOT database configuration & MOVA validation. This is a role where you’ll combine your project management skills and your technical engineering/systems knowledge to the fullest.

What will you be doing?

  • Ensure effective traffic signal-based bus priority, closed circuit television, bus lane enforcement, real time passenger information and ticketing infrastructure and applications are delivered
  • Support the Senior Manager Sprint Technical Programme in delivering and reporting on the outputs and outcomes of the technical workstream
  • Ensure client responsibilities for health and safety are fulfilled in line with our Health and Safety Policy and procedures
  • Review and update relevant risk registers risk registers ensure project schedules are kept up to date
  • Manage stakeholders, subcontractors and suppliers, monitoring progress of the above technical projects, and escalating matters related to supplier performance
  • Support Technical Board and LHA interfaces, deputising for Senior Manager - Technical Programme Manager where required
  • Liaise with key stakeholders including Birmingham Airport, Virgin Trains and Jaguar Land Rover, Local Highway Authorities, utilities contractors and internal staff

About you

We are looking for someone who can support the delivery of this major public transport programme.  Ideally, with an appropriate degree level qualification (or equivalent experience) in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering, Transport Management or IT together with an appropriate professional membership e.g. APM, ILT, IET, BCS, CIHT. You’ll already understand public transport operations and have experience of Intelligent Transport Systems.

The scheme, the first bus priority corridor of its kind anywhere in the country, is designed to support the region's economic growth and expanding population, and will actively combat congestion by offering reliable, connected, and sustainable public transport. First services will be operational by May 2022 and will call at key destinations including the NEC, Jaguar Land Rover Solihull and Alexander Stadium.
