Job title:   Social Worker

Location: Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Specialist Safeguarding Unit, Castle House, Barracks Road, ST5 1BL

Salary: Grade 9 £32,234 – 36,992

Contract: Fixed Term Contract for 12 months from June 2021-June 2022 –  37 hrs full time or part time, Job share – we are flexible to requests

Our team

We have a great opportunity to join the Newcastle & Kidsgrove Specialist Safeguarding Team 4 on a 12 month fixed term contract as a Social Worker to cover parental leave. We’re a great team, headed up by Claire Cartwright and many of us have worked here at Newcastle for a long time. We stay because we feel supported by our colleagues, we feel empowered to do our very best and we know the work we do really makes a difference to our community.

Our approach

In Staffordshire, we have embedded a new restorative practice model. We want to improve the lives of all children and young people, using a whole system approach enabling children to be happy, healthy and safe. And we do this by supporting families to enable children to remain at home wherever possible. We confidently manage risks and are supported to be courageous and ambitious as an organisation. Restorative approaches are widely accepted as a highly effective way of achieving better outcomes for children, young people and their families.

What you’ll do

As a qualified Social Worker, with a minimum of 12 months post qualification experience you’ll have experience working with children and families and you’ll be committed to supporting children to remain with their families. Your caseload will include completing Initial Visits, Child Social Work Assessments and S47 enquiries. You’ll manage child in need and child protection plans and do direct work with children.  Your role will include care proceedings work and some work with looked after children.

What you’ll have:

You’ll be a great communicator so building those key relationships with children, families and other professionals will come naturally to you. You’ll also be committed to striving for the best outcomes for children. We work using a restorative practice model so it would be great if you have experience of this but if you don’t, we’ll train you in this approach.

How we’ll support you:

Making sure you are well supported and given the opportunity to develop is a high priority at Staffordshire. That’s why we offer an excellent staff development programme including a new aspiring team managers programme and we support colleagues through regular supervision including ¼ Group Supervision. We also offer other employed benefits such as:

  • An excellent local government pension scheme
  • Generous holiday entitlement from 24 up to 33 days (plus 2 extra statutory days and bank holidays) depending on job role and length of service
  • The option to buy up to an additional 2 weeks annual leave
  • A range of flexible working options, depending on your job role, which includes agile working, flexible retirement
  • Family Friendly Policies - maternity, adoption, paternity and parental leave
  • Volunteering Scheme
  • Training and development opportunities, including coaching and mentoring
  • Access to health and wellbeing support (including Occupational Health, Physiotherapy and Counselling Services)
  • Eye care vouchers
  • Car lease scheme / cycle & car loan scheme / employee car share scheme
  • Bus and rail travel discounts
