We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.

We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning.  In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.

Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas:

  • Nursery Workers
  • Teaching Assistants
  • Leadership/Management; and
  • Customer Care.

We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop.

Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

We welcome applications from anyone who wants to make a difference to the lives of people in Coventry.

What is the job role?

A rare opportunity has arisen to join the Family Learning tutor team working for Coventry Adult Education Service. You will be involved in the development, planning and delivery of a range of exciting Family Learning programmes across the city in a range of venues.  Family Learning sessions are welcoming, friendly groups where, as well as taking part in the programmes, parents can meet other people with children of a similar age and share ideas and experiences. They will explore issues surrounding their child’s learning and development and will be supported in making inexpensive and effective resources to use with their children at home. Programmes are open to all parents/carers of children aged 0-11 years of age, whatever their level of ability or experience. The courses help parents to raise the achievement of their children by becoming more confident co-educators.

You will deliver Family Learning sessions with parents and carers in schools, family hubs and community centres. Family English, Maths and Language (FEML) programmes aim to give parents and carers the skills, knowledge and confidence to support their child’s literacy, language and numeracy development. Programmes are developed in partnership with primary schools and concentrate on the specific age groups or developmental stages of the children. Parents are given an insight into their child’s learning targets and the modern teaching methods used in primary schools today. There is also a focus on parenting skills and supporting parents/carers to understand the emotional development of their children.

The days and times of work are flexible and could be arranged to fit in with existing part-time work or commitments.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

You will need relevant qualifications, up to date knowledge of the primary school curriculum, and experience in teaching or supporting families.

There are 420 permanent hours available which involves teaching 7 x 2-hour sessions per week, usually for 10 weeks per term.

The work is varied and challenging and brings great satisfaction as you begin to realise the difference you make to the lives of the families you work with and the achievement of both the adults and the children

If you would like an informal discussion about this post, please contact Kate Steventon Kate.steventon@coventry.gov.uk or Steve Withers Steve.withers@coventry.gov.uk.

Please note the salary advertised will be pro-rata to hours and weeks worked.

We are a city that is going places - with an inspiring, world-famous history and exciting times ahead. We are UK City of Culture 2021; home to award-winning universities, top level sport and concerts and famous brands such as Jaguar Land Rover and Severn Trent. We are a part of the ‘Midlands-Engine’, the home of the UK motor industry and a proud multicultural city. Major developments are taking shape around the city, including a new-look shopping centre, a water park, new business quarter, restaurants and a modernised rail station. More and more firms and families are relocating to our city as they see what we have to offer. Coventry is a great place to live and work, and it’s getting even better!

The Council
