Senior Geospatial Development & Support Specialist - Ref: RT01121
Salary: G9 £33,782 - £38,890
Contract: Full time, permanent
It’s an exciting time in Walsall Council as we deliver the Walsall Proud Programme where there is a big dependency on using the right technology to digitise and enable many front line services.
People and Place are at the heart of delivering our services and in ICT, our vision is that all applications will interface with our Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Do you have analytical thinking skills that stretch boundaries? Are you a good communicator? Do you enjoy paying attention to minute detail? If so, this may be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
We are looking to recruit a GIS specialist who will be responsible for the daily operation of the GIS service which includes tasks such as inserting various types of data into GIS databases such as text or spreadsheet files, aerial or satellite imagery, tabular data and digitising paper maps or map images manually; designing, building and maintaining our GIS databases.
You will need to have in-depth knowledge and vast experience of using MapInfo and Astun Technology’s iShare product suite, based upon open layers technology, used widely at Walsall Council to analyse spatial and non-spatial information, to contribute to improved service delivery, support operational services and process improvements.
You will be examining and analysing information to effect service change along with interfacing GIS with other technologies and supporting the development and publishing of online and mobile maps for public consumption.
You will need to demonstrate proficiency and profound knowledge in several programming languages (such as Python and Java script) which are used in our GIS environment in order to automate processes, or develop customised tools and workflows. As well as being a GIS specialist you will need to be able to communicate at all levels as daily contact with internal and external customers, agencies and suppliers is also part of this key role in our ICT Team.
This post is covered by the Government’s Code of Practice on the English Language Fluency Duty for public sector workers. The post holder will be required to communicate verbally with customers and provide advice and/or information in accurate spoken English.
