As Engagement Assistant, you will be part of the communications team helping to explain and promote our portfolio of transport schemes. We are looking for a proactive and creative person with a keen eye for detail and an awareness of the complex political landscape we work in. Working in a small team, you will be able to take complex technical studies and create an engaging narrative that appeals to stakeholders, partners and the public. You will have creative ideas and the media nous to promote this work widely to our diverse audiences.

As the Sub-national Transport Body for the Midlands and transport partner of the Midlands Engine, our partnership is vast: councils, LEPs, Chambers of Commerce, airports, HS2 Ltd, Network Rail, Highways England, and our sponsor the Department for Transport. You’ll work closely with all of them, as well as MPs and businesses, to amplify our messages and build relationships internally and externally.

About you

We're looking for a detail-focused, media-savvy and politically-aware engagement assistant to join our busy External Affairs Team. Whether you’re writing press releases for media, speaking to journalists, creating marketing materials, recording a podcast or reaching out to local MPs, your goal is simple – to get a better transport deal for the Midlands and promote our region on the national stage.

This is an ideal role for someone with previous experience working in marketing, communications or journalism who is looking to take the next step in their career. You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of media relations, marketing, public affairs and political engagement from an experienced and supportive team. While learning opportunities will be vast, a keen interest in current affairs and politics is essential.

About us

Midlands Connect explores, develops and recommends major transport projects which provide the biggest possible economic and social benefits for the Midlands and the rest of the UK. These initiatives will create more capacity for passengers and freight on the Midlands’ roads and railways. As the transport arm of the Midlands Engine, we work with local authorities, LEPs and Chambers of Commerce, as well as Highways England, Network Rail and the Midlands’ two international airports, to ensure national transport projects benefit the Midlands and Midlands projects benefit the nation.

As the Sub-National Transport Body (STB) for the Midlands, Midlands Connect is developing a regional plan which aims to boost economic growth, social mobility and sustainability.

Additional information

Please provide detailed information in your application outlining your suitability for the post and ensure it is submitted by the closing date.

Please note that we reserve the right to bring forward the closing date of any of its job vacancies if we receive a suitable number of quality applications from which to make a shortlist. Therefore, we recommend that you apply as soon as possible rather than wait until the published closing date.

This is a remote working opportunity until a date is agreed for the Midlands Connect Team to return to our usual place of work at Baskerville House, Centenary Square, Birmingham.  Although Midlands Connect is based in Birmingham, the way we have all worked remotely over the past few months has shown us how we can make that work.

We are committed to developing an organisation that is representative of the diverse communities that we serve and welcome applications from all sections of the community. The following groups are currently underrepresented: young people, Black, Asian and ethnic minority groups and women at senior levels.

We are a Disability Confident Employer and offer a guaranteed interview scheme for applicants who meet the essential job role criteria. We will make reasonable adjustments, in line with the Equality Act, for disabled applicants if these are needed. Wherever possible we will offer flexible working options which assist work-life balance and support service delivery for the customer.
