Job Details

As part of the WMCA’s ambitious climate change and environment programme, we have identified the circular economy as providing significant economic, social and environmental opportunities for the region. The WMCA is currently producing the first Circular Economy Routemap for the West Midlands, which will identify the enabling policies and strategic projects, focusing on strengths in manufacturing, sustainable construction, a sharing economy and food.

To support this, we are looking for Circular Economy and Green Economy Project and Delivery Officer to lead on projects and initiatives that will emerge from the  Circular Economy Routemap, and to work with colleagues across the region to drive green manufacturing and industrial decarbonisation. Working with stakeholders, you will also develop new opportunities for projects, policy and research. Working with colleagues in our Economy and Strategy directorate, Energy Capital and the West Midlands Growth Company, you will drive wider initiatives to promote green manufacturing and industrial decarbonisation.

This role is being offered on a two-year fixed term contract.

About you

We’re looking for someone who wants to make a real difference to our region and our planet, and who wants to leave a lasting legacy for generations to come. You’ll be curious about, and have passion for, current challenges related to sustainability, conservation and climate change. Graduate calibre, or with the equivalent knowledge and experience working on the circular economy, you’ll understand the wider issues around the green economy and industrial decarbonisation.

You’ll have exposure to a broad range of stakeholders in this role, including government departments for funding and policy devolution, and therefore you’ll need excellent interpersonal skills and be able to confidently lead and deliver solutions and practical programmes of work to a range of people.

What’s more, you’ll have a clear commitment to creating a fairer, greener, healthier West Midlands with examples of how you have put this commitment into action and an understanding of relevant policy agendas and their significance.

About the team

In June 2019, the WMCA declared a climate emergency and set a 2041 zero carbon target. In March 2021, we had published our first Five Year Plan setting out our priorities for decarbonising the region. The West Midlands Combined Authority’s Environment Team, which forms part of the Public Service Reform Directorate, is leading the delivery of the directorate’s work on environment and climate change with the aim to create a fairer, greener and healthier West Midlands.
