Job Details

The Neighbourhoods Division is responsible for Birmingham’s Neighbourhood Advice, Neighbourhood Development, Cultural Development, Sport & Leisure, Community and Wellbeing Centres and Events.

 

The Sport & Leisure service operate a combined model of directly and externally managed services and these are delivered through various forms such as partnerships, community infrastructure, contracts with external parties, commissioned delivery etc.

 

Birmingham is renowned for its world class sporting offer, the hosting of major events and its high quality of leisure provision.  

 

The Commonwealth Games offers an opportunity to reposition Birmingham as the most active and successful sporting city in England. We are ambitious and determined to maximise the opportunities that hosting the Commonwealth Games brings.

 

Reporting directly into the Head of Sport & Physical Activity this role will have responsibility for developing and delivering a range of Sport & Physical Activity strategies to enable the Council to progress its strategic vision for sport in the city. With further responsibilities ranging from project management/capital build of leisure projects including Moseley Road Baths and supporting the redevelopment of Alexander Stadium to overseeing the elite sport programme for swimming and gymnastics.

 

The Council recognises the need for partner engagement in delivering successful sporting outcomes across Birmingham. The successful candidate will work closely with National Governing Bodies of Sport and Sport England to aid recovery from the ongoing pandemic, increase participation and improve sporting provision and pathways in the city.

 

In this role you will lead on the development and delivery of an identified range of Sport and Physical strategies with relevant partners to drive participation and help tackle inequality/accessibility. Leading on developing our strategic approach is vital but so too is the investment in new infrastructure and the management of our wide- ranging sport and leisure offer, whether through directly delivered or externalised services.

 

You will be responsible for project management of capital build leisure projects, including those already identified or identified through the development of the Sport & Physical Activity Strategy. Engaging and working with partners is key to this role especially in delivering an exciting and sustainable legacy from the Games. You will also identify new funding streams for existing and new leisure provision and will identify opportunities, challenges and issues to drive forward activities to capitalise on opportunities. The opportunities presented by the Commonwealth Games are clearly there to be seized.

 

You will have experience working at a senior level within a sport and physical activity environment and have a successful track record in delivering sport, physical activity and built provision strategies. You are required to have knowledge and a proven track record of project management and delivering major capital build projects.

 

You will need to think analytically to create and use concepts to explain and interpret situations and link information to create and communicate a rich pool of ideas. You will have the ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including elected members and senior officers.

 

You must be able to plan, allocate and evaluate work carried out by yourself and members of your team as well as empower team members in an effective way. You must also be willing to coach, mentor and develop others as well and undertaking self-improvement.
