Job Details

Three opportunities have arisen to engage directly with the Government’s flagship decentralisation and local economic growth agenda in the Cities and Local Growth Unit.

The Cities and Local Growth Unit (CLGU) is at the heart of the Government’s economic agenda, reporting jointly into MHCLG and BEIS Secretaries of State. We drive policy aimed at boosting growth and productivity in all parts of England, and with over half our staff based outside of London, we are firmly rooted in places.

We work with local institutions - including Mayoral Combined Authorities (MCAs) and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) - to develop economic strategies that harness economic assets in localities and deliver coherent and long-term plans to improve prosperity everywhere. We support local economic development, leading on a range of initiatives including:

- UK Community Renewal Fund and Levelling Up Fund;
- local economic growth and business support;
- local economic intelligence;
- Covid response and recovery;
- support for towns and high streets; and
- devolution of powers and funding

Key to our role is maintaining positive and strong relationships with partners, supporting them in responding to their specific and diverse challenges and opportunities. We are at the forefront of policy and delivery on levelling up, working collaboratively with other Government Departments to develop new growth policies and funding to ensure that targeted local programmes can be supported, which provide local leaders with the necessary tools to invest in improving their places.

We're looking for people who are self-starters and have the determination to succeed in challenging situations. Already skilled at managing constructive relationships you will be able to see the bigger picture, work at pace, and remain calm, despite constantly changing priorities and challenges. You will have experience of developing policies which make a real difference. Excellent communication and organisational skills and robust judgement will ensure you maintain a professional approach.

DLUHC is a great place to work where you will have the opportunity for a long and fulfilling career. We have opportunities across our many professions that cater to everyone– whether you are new to the Civil Service or an existing Civil Servant looking for a change, and whether you're just starting out, or an experienced professional, we want to hear from you.

The last 12 months have been an extraordinary time for people and communities across the country. DLUHC has played an instrumental role in the Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic: by taking steps to protect thousands of rough sleepers; in shielding the most vulnerable in society; introducing a series of emergency measures to support people, places and sectors; and more. We have also made significant progress in delivering programmes for Government, such as driving forward planning reforms, and pressing ahead with our mission to deliver the homes the country needs.

Now, we’re looking to the future and the work we need to do to continue making a difference to the lives of people across the UK. We need to continue building and developing our workforce so that we can effectively deliver our priorities, which include:
• Supporting communities to respond and recover from COVID-19
• Getting more people onto the housing ladder and building safer, greener and more beautiful homes
• Delivering our mission to level up all parts of the country
• Bringing about the biggest change in building safety for a generation
• Ending rough sleeping
