Job Details
The Local Government & Communities (LGC) Directorate supports local councils to deliver public services we all rely upon, from collecting rubbish and fixing pot-holes to caring for the most vulnerable people in communities. The Local Government Stewardship division plays a key role in ensuring that councils are able to continue delivering those services in a funding and policy environment that is increasingly challenging. We have several vacancies at different grades.
Job description
2 SEOs Local Government Intervention
Local authorities are independent of central government and, in normal circumstances, are responsible for providing local services. However, our Secretary of State has powers (the “Best Value” powers) to intervene in a local authority in exceptional circumstances where there is evidence of significant and systemic failure by an authority to secure best value for local residents. The Local Government Intervention Team’s role is to work closely with colleagues to assess and advise as to whether these powers should be used and then to support Ministers in putting in place inspections and interventions where appropriate, for example, the recently announced intervention at Liverpool City Council.
1 SEO Local Government standards and conduct
Responsibilities
The Local Government Stewardship Division Standards and Conduct team has responsibility for leading and setting the direction of policy on local government conduct and standards in public life, making links with broader Departmental and Government policies and the local government sector. It also oversees policy on the Local Government Ombudsman (LGSCO), the Recommended Code of Practice for Local Authority Publicity (the Publicity Code), Local Authority Remote Meetings regulations and Local Authority Byelaws.
Company
DLUHC is a great place to work where you will have the opportunity for a long and fulfilling career. We have opportunities across our many professions that cater to everyone– whether you are new to the Civil Service or an existing Civil Servant looking for a change, and whether you're just starting out, or an experienced professional, we want to hear from you.
The last 12 months have been an extraordinary time for people and communities across the country. DLUHC has played an instrumental role in the Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic: by taking steps to protect thousands of rough sleepers; in shielding the most vulnerable in society; introducing a series of emergency measures to support people, places and sectors; and more. We have also made significant progress in delivering programmes for Government, such as driving forward planning reforms, and pressing ahead with our mission to deliver the homes the country needs.
Now, we’re looking to the future and the work we need to do to continue making a difference to the lives of people across the UK. We need to continue building and developing our workforce so that we can effectively deliver our priorities, which include:
• Supporting communities to respond and recover from COVID-19
• Getting more people onto the housing ladder and building safer, greener and more beautiful homes
• Delivering our mission to level up all parts of the country
• Bringing about the biggest change in building safety for a generation
• Ending rough sleeping
We are for everyone
At DLUHC we value diversity and inclusion and actively encourage and welcome applications from everyone, including those that are underrepresented in our workforce. We promote equality of opportunity in all aspects of employment and a working environment free from discrimination, harassment, bullying and victimisation.
DLUHC want to bring in and bring on a diverse workforce at all levels.
