It’s a very exciting time to join Walsall Council. We have recently launched our Social Work Academy which embodies our commitment to become a Reflective Learning organisation. This will in turn support our return to real social work, believing that effective relationships are at the key driver for sustained positive change with children, young people and their families. To be able to practice in this way, caseloads are reducing. We are committed to reducing caseloads across the service from 15 to 12 for ASYEs and from 20 to 15 for those workers post-ASYE.
The Senior Practitioner role is being reintroduced to our career pathway for Social Work practitioners, in recognition of the need to retain experienced practitioners at the frontline.
Being based within a small team of between 6/7 Social Workers, in either the Safeguarding or Corporate Parenting Service, you will work alongside the Team Manager to support the development of Social Work expertise within your service area.
You will hold a small caseload of complex cases to retain your practice wisdom, whilst co-working, mentoring and coaching less experienced members of the team. You will facilitate reflective group supervision sessions on a weekly basis alongside the Team Manager to create a team culture that drives high performance expectations within a supportive, learning environment.
We have launched restorative practice as the foundation for our social work approach across the service to ensure that children and families experience a consistence response from those people working with them. In addition, with the support of the NSPCC, we are training our staff in the use of a range of evidence based tools. To support this there is a comprehensive learning and development offer which addresses the needs of ASYEs, those workers in their early professional development stage through to more experienced workers. Your role will be to ensure that these new approaches and models are embedded in our work with children, young people and families.
The supervisory ratios for managers are reducing in order that they can provide you with regular, reflective supervision and provide you with the support you need to the very best for children in Walsall.
To excel, you’ll need a social work qualification and substantial experience of working with children and families in a statutory setting. In addition, you’ll need to be passionate about safeguarding vulnerable children, believe in the importance of building effective relationships with the children and families you work with and have excellent organisation and communication skills.
