The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council.  We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need. 

We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.  

We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning.  In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.

Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas: 

  • Nursery Workers
  • Teaching Assistants
  • Leadership/Management; and 
  • Customer Care. 

We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop. 

Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

What is the job role?

Part-time evening reception/administration staff required 

Term time only

Coventry City Council’s highly successful Adult Education Service is seeking experienced staff to provide high-quality reception and venue administration support in the evenings.

Three posts are available:

Two posts: 2 evenings a week 5.30 pm – 9.15 pm (7.5 hours a week) 

One post: 3 evenings a week 5.30 – 9.15 pm (11.25 hours a week)

You must have previous reception and administrative experience. You will provide professional, welcoming, frontline customer service, ensuring the smooth running of the Adult Education evening provision in the venue in which you are based. 

This includes: 

  • Meeting and greeting learners and other visitors at reception 
  • Dealing with straightforward queries from learners and tutors  
  • Processing enrolments and payments 
  • Ensuring course-related paperwork is up to date and available for tutors.
  • You will be expected to undertake other service-related administrative tasks within the pay grade 
  • To use your initiative to deal with issues as and when they arise and be able to identify more complex issues that need to be escalated.  

Please note that candidates MUST have a Level 2 English and Maths qualification (GCSE Grade C/4 or above or Functional Skills Level 2, or equivalent), together with previous experience of reception and administration work, in order to be considered for these roles.

These posts are fixed contract to October 2022.

Please note the salary advertised will be pro-rata to hours and weeks worked (Hourly rate £9.81).

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

To be successful in this role we need people who are:

  • Experienced administrators who have a high level of communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal to deal with members of the public and who are able to establish a rapport with colleagues, team members and learners
  • People with a wide range of reception, clerical and administrative work experience
  • People who have an English and maths qualification at Level 2 ie GCSE Grade C/4 or equivalent)
  • People who have previous experience of using Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint
