Arc School Old Arley is seeking to appoint a Deputy Head.

Kedleston Group Ltd is an independent provider of SEMH day and residential schools as well as children’s homes across England. Our schools and homes support children and young people living with social, emotional and mental health problems (SEMH) and specific learning difficulties, which affects their learning and ability to do everyday things. Our dedicated autism (ASC) schools work with young people who are high functioning and have associated needs such as mental health problems, attention deficit hyperactive disorder and learning difficulties. Arc School Old Arley are an independent specialist day school situated within a rural village near Nuneaton, Warwickshire. The spacious school environment is bright and welcoming with a variety of different learning spaces inside and outside which provides a safe learning environment. We aim to equip all children and young people with the necessary life skills, academic or vocational qualifications and emotional intelligence to succeed in life.

Main Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Promotion and development of learning and teaching across the school
  • Quality Assurance and professional standards, including performance management
  • Curriculum Forward Planning and timetable construction
  • Data Analysis and Development 
  • Assessment, Recording and Reporting
  • Continuing Professional Development and staff induction
  • Leading phase group 1 meetings

Additionally, the Deputy Head’s focus will be to assist the Head in addressing and developing the following:

Leadership & Stimulating a Positive Ethos

  • Ensure that the broader staff team understand the School’s Vision and Mission with every individual member of the team feeling they have a role to play in delivering them
  • Act at all times as an ambassador for the School in a manner which upholds its Values and Ethos
  • Inspire good working relationships among staff to ensure the School delivers to the highest standards
  • Develop a shared vision, which inspires and motivates students, staff and all other members of the School community
  • Promote equality of opportunity for all through the School’s policies, procedures and practices
  • Maintain a highly visible presence throughout the School ensuring continuous interaction with pupils and staff

Staff Development, Appraisal & Training

  • Ensure that local and Group strategies and procedures for staff induction, professional development and performance review/supervision are implemented
  • Work as part of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) within the school, ensuring the effective operational management of the school on a day-to-day basis
  • Develop an ethos which encourages and nurtures collaboration, innovation, individual and team creativity, and a culture of high expectations for all
  • Take responsibility for ensuring all staff have training which is appropriate to their role (this must cover statutory and non-statutory training)

Accountability

  • Retain accountability for the areas identified within the main roles and responsibilities above
  • Develop and nurture a School Ethos which enables everyone to work together, share knowledge and understanding, celebrate success and accept responsibility for outcomes
  • Ensure individual staff accountabilities are clearly defined, understood and agreed and are subject to rigorous review and evaluation
  • Develop an ethos where the SLT takes responsibility for ensuring the smooth running of the school, regardless of any notional role demarcations

Strengthening Community

  • Collaborate with parents, carers, Local Authorities and other agencies to ensure the School meets the wider needs of its students and the local community
  • Ensure regular communication occurs with parents and carers on student performance.  Ensure the School works in partnership with them to maximize individual potential and where problems are identified, ensure the School works towards resolution
  • Work proactively to maintain effective partnerships with the community promoting and representing the School positively and develop community involvement
  • Seek opportunities to invite parents and carers, community figures, business or other organisations into the School to enhance and enrich the School and its value to the wider community
  • Create and promote positive strategies for challenging racial and other prejudice

Managing, Teaching and Learning

  • Ensure the School manages its human, financial and physical resources effectively to provide an efficient, effective and safe learning environment
  • In conjunction with the Headteacher, recruit, retain and deploy staff across the school to ensure all children’s education needs are appropriately met and the best possible outcomes are achieved for each pupil
  • In conjunction with the Headteacher, monitor use of School resources to ensure value for money
  • In conjunction with the Headteacher, devise and implement an appropriate curriculum for the School taking into account pupils’ experience, interests, aptitudes and needs
  • In conjunction with the Headteacher, monitor and evaluate standards of teaching and learning throughout the School and ensure pupil progress is consistent and of a high standard
  • Ensure high standards of behaviour and discipline for pupils and staff
  • Ensure staff and students are motivated by personal interest, encouragement and concern for individual needs
  • Ensure the School monitors, evaluates and reviews classroom practice and promotes improvement strategies so that underperformance is challenged at all levels and effective corrective action is undertaken

Safeguarding

  • Act as one of the Designated Safeguarding Persons for the setting, attending such Local Authority training as is necessary to be recognised as such and to carry out the role effectively
  • Monitor the consistent development and delivery of policy and operational practice across the school, ensuring the safety, health and welfare of staff and young people is always to the fore
  • Work proactively with the relevant agencies in dealing with all Safeguarding issues to ensure the School’s children are protected to the highest standards
  • Work proactively with the Group’s Safeguarding Lead to ensure the School’s safeguarding practices are always up to date

Personal Training & Development

  • Participate in arrangements for your own induction, supervision, training and development
  • Undertake any qualifications deemed necessary by the Executive Management Team to fulfil the requirements of the post
  • Review your own methods of care and support

Other Ad-hoc Duties

  • To complete other duties as necessary to ensure the continued success of both the school and the Kedleston Group
