Job Details
MHCLG is looking to recruit people at Deputy Director (Senior Civil Service Pay Band 1) level for project delivery roles. As a Project Deputy Director, successful candidates can expect to be involved in quickly building effective relationships and networks with ministers and senior colleagues; ensuring that projects meet their objectives and deliver projected benefits; ensuring strategic and operational risks and issues are identified, prioritised, assessed and mitigated. The roles will be challenging and varied and could be managing projects or programmes in any area of MHCLG’s policy portfolio, from housing and planning to local growth to building safety and net zero.
Job description
As a Project Delivery Deputy Director, successful candidates can expect to be involved in a range of the follow:
Quickly building effective relationships and networks with ministers and senior colleagues across own and other teams/organisations.
Ensures that projects meets their objectives and deliver projected benefits.
Ensures necessary approvals are followed.
Accounts for programme costs, time and budgets.
Ensures strategic and operational risks and issues are identified, prioritised, assessed and mitigated.
Bringing together experts from different disciplines to provide advice to ministers that is based on the best available evidence and research, at pace.
Working in partnership with internal / external stakeholders to ensure the project can succeed.

Responsibilities
The Person
You will be an experienced and visible leader, able to engage a motivated team working under pressure and at pace, and to actively contribute to the wider leadership agenda of the Directorate and Department.
You will have experience of being responsible for, or directly managing the delivery of projects, to support the Department’s objectives. You will demonstrated a proven ability to create and present a compelling vision and set clear direction that engages the organisation and motivates individuals to work towards a common goal.
Experience of building and managing relationships is essential, as you will need to work closely with senior leaders across and outside government in this role. You will need to be a collaborator and influencer; and to thrive on handling a broad range of issues.
You will be an expert in risk and issue management, able to assess risks and issues, work with teams to generate and execute effective mitigation and contingency countermeasures. You will be able to assess situations to determine their importance and urgency and make clear decisions which are timely and in the best interests of the programme and organisation

Essential Criteria
Inspiring, confident and empowering leader who can set strategic direction, lead effectively through ambiguity and get the best out of a diverse workforce through promoting an inclusive, high performance culture.
Strong track record of project leadership, directing the delivery of complex strategic initiatives in a rapidly changing environment.
Experience of being responsible for, or directly managing, the delivery of projects/programmes to deliver business outcome.
Demonstrable knowledge and experience of applying blended delivery methods in order to achieve project outcomes.
A track record of delivering at pace, with a strong focus on priorities, holding others to account and responding quickly to changing priorities.
The ability to demonstrate strong and effective stakeholder management including influencing others to change their approach. This may include ministers and/or comparable senior groups externally.
An APM practitioner/professional.
