Job Details

Are you looking for the opportunity to play a part in one of the biggest and most exciting events that the West Midlands has ever hosted?  The Commonwealth Games are coming to Birmingham in the summer of next year and the next 12 months will therefore be an exciting time as we prepare to deliver a truly transformational moment in the history of Birmingham and the West Midlands.

The rail and tram networks will play a vital role in transporting people to, from and around the region during the Games period.  Both networks will be exceptionally busy and it is crucial that proper planning, preparation and delivery takes place to accommodate this – and this role will play an important part in making this happen by bringing rail industry partners together to support the planning and delivery of rail and tram services during the Games.

What will you be doing?

  • Develop and assemble evidence to understand and demonstrate the impact of Games on the transport network, identifying measures and plans to support successful Games delivery
  • Project manage the development and delivery of specific projects related to Games delivery, covering public transport, park and ride, accessible transport and active travel
  • Support the Spectator Transport Manager in acting and contributing as an interface between the Spectator and Workforce Team and Venue Transport Working Groups and other external Games’ meetings
  • Liaise with programme and project managers within TfWM and external partners, including the B2022 Organising Committee, to support appropriate governance and ensure adherence to the programme
  • Support the planning and delivery of spectator and workforce services meeting agreed service level requirements
  • Support the relationship with the Organising Committee and other partners on matters relating to spectator and workforce transport
  • Prepare and deliver Games-time operational plans across one or more transport modes: Bus, Rail, Active travel, Parking, Taxi
  • Provide operational support to the delivery of spectator transport at Games-time
  • Manage consultants and service providers

About you

You should be a self-starter, boast excellent organisation skills, and be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.  You will need to be able to learn fast and respond to emerging challenges as they develop.  You will have a sound grasp of the railway industry and be able to apply this practically to Games planning across a variety of different areas.  Excellent collaborative working will be key: you’ll need to work with a wide range of partners across both the rail industry and West Midlands Metro teams.

The role would suit anyone who is looking to build on existing experience within the rail industry and who wants to make a tangible and high-profile difference to the region.  It is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to work across the rail industry in delivering what will be an event of huge significance for the West Midlands.

About the team

Transport for West Midlands, the transport arm of the West Midlands Combined Authority, has been tasked with developing a Games Transport Plan for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The Games Transport Plan is an integral measure, which will set out a strategic approach to planning and coordination of transport to support the Games; covering the transportation of spectators, athletes and the Games Family, while at the same time ensuring that any disruption to transport users is kept to a minimum.

The plan will set out a strategic approach to planning and coordination of transport to support the Games. It sets out how spectators, athletes and Games officials and personnel will be transported come Birmingham 2022, as well as detailing how disruption to those conducting unrelated travel can be minimised.
