We are looking for a Transport Data Researcher to join our highly successful Data Insights team. You will help us deliver intelligence about our transport system that can support better outcomes for the people, businesses and fantastic place that is the West Midlands.

We are at the epi-centre of much of the UK’s research and are piloting new mobility services and data driven systems. We have a globally unique and massive programme of innovation and data science. This is driving a revolution in our transport system and enabling the delivery of an unprecedented scale of infrastructure investment. We deliver insight and analytics built on real-time data and we get recognised for our industry leading work.

As our Transport Data Researcher you will assist in the development and delivery of projects and services to the Data Insights team. You will undertake research, monitoring and evaluation of transport strategy and scheme development activity by sourcing relevant data and information and presenting this in reports, data analysis and presentations. Qualitative and quantitative techniques and learning will be applied help ensure that policies and activities are evidenced based and contribute to wider economic, housing, regeneration, education, health and environmental agendas.

What will you be doing?

  • Identify and obtain data sets that will inform strategy and policy development and transport scheme monitoring
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of a central intelligence hub, working in collaboration with partners and stakeholders
  • Work in partnership with stakeholders and partner Local Authorities to develop and deliver transport projects and strategies
  • Undertake research and analysis that supports the wider activity of the Policy and Strategy Department

About you

We’re looking for someone with bags of experience collecting and validating intelligence, and assessing the credibility of information and reliability of sources. Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with internal and external partners in a diplomatic and professional manner
  • Excellent   verbal, presentational and report writing skills and comfortable communicating with a wide range of audiences
  • Proven record in operating and developing PC based analysis and graphics software
  • Evidence of working as a member of a team to ensure shared goals are achieved
  • Ability to prioritise own workload effectively, prioritising and working to tight deadlines
  • Knowledge of latest data analytical and presentation tools such as Tableau, Mapinfo, QGIS would be desirable
  • Experience and knowledge of transport would be advantageous

About the team

With billions of pounds worth of investment being put into the West Midlands transport system, and with projects being delivered across the region from key partners such as High Speed Two, Highways England, local authorities, Network Rail and Transport for West Midlands, keeping residents and businesses moving has never been more important.

Our Data Insights Team sits within the Policy, Strategy & Innovation arm of Transport for West Midlands and provides transport data services across West Midlands Combined Authority and our partners. We help to collect, manage, report, analyse and visualise data. We also carry out research projects and publish our findings. We give access to data on things like traffic and public transport passenger counts, road traffic collisions and congestion, and planning. We help people to understand how changes to the region might affect transport. We are responsible for the PRISM transport model, ensuring it works across the region.
