Job Details

The 2022 Commonwealth Games, held in Birmingham, will be the biggest sporting and cultural event that the city and the region have ever seen. With an estimated television audience of 1.5 billion people, it will showcase Birmingham, the West Midlands and the entire country as an amazing place to live, work, study, visit and do business.

When the Commonwealth Games start, the eyes of the world will be on the West Midlands, and so it is critical that visitors can travel around swiftly and efficiently whilst minimising the impact on residents. With more than one million spectators expected over the eleven days, as well as competitors, volunteers, staff and the world’s media, we must get our transport offering just right - and this role will be key to a successful Games transport operation.

This role joins the team until August 2022 and is integral to the successful delivery of a large, complex, multi-disciplinary programme of delivery for several projects related to transport infrastructure and operational delivery within the Commonwealth Games Integrated Transport Programme.

What will you be doing?

  • Plan, develop and manage projects from end-to-end, and monitor and report their performance
  • Develop and manage a set of appropriate monitoring and reporting mechanisms suitable for projects covering the full project life-cycle including decommissioning
  • Manage risks and issues at a strategic, organisational and operational level
  • Manage and maintain suitable technical project management products appropriate to the importance, scale and complexity of each project
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with all stakeholders
  • Approve the project plans of the project teams, negotiating work packages as required
  • Report and represent the projects to the required governance groups
  • Create and maintain the programme plan, showing an integrated realisation of the key deliverables of the projects

About you

We're looking for someone with previous experience of managing transport or highways projects from initiation to close out and who is able to demonstrate robust and successful stakeholder management skills. This role is suited to an individual who excels in a fast paced and agile environment and someone who enjoys working with multiple stakeholders and on more than one project at a time. We're looking for the following:

  • Professional qualification in project/programme management or equivalent experience in a similar role
  • Excellent technical knowledge and practical understanding of project management related to transport or highways
  • Technical proficiency (e.g. MS Project, Excel, SharePoint, Enterprise Systems)
  • Ability to build and maintain effective partnerships
  • Good organisational skills, especially those associated with putting action plans together to make them come to fruition and delivering within the context of the organisational objectives and goals
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary organisation
  • Experience of other major event programmes, preferred
  • Experience of working in a high-pressured operational role

About the team

Transport for West Midlands, the transport arm of the West Midlands Combined Authority, has been tasked with developing a Games Transport Plan for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The Games Transport Plan is an integral measure, which will set out a strategic approach to planning and coordination of transport to support the Games; covering the transportation of spectators, athletes and the Games Family, while at the same time ensuring that any disruption to transport users is kept to a minimum.

The plan will set out a strategic approach to planning and coordination of transport to support the Games. It sets out how spectators, athletes and Games officials and personnel will be transported come Birmingham 2022, as well as detailing how disruption to those conducting unrelated travel can be minimised.
